Outdoor backpacks

The right backpack for outdoor activities

When choosing a backpack, you’ve got to consider what it will be used for. Depending on the terrain and what kind of an adventure you’ve got planned, there will be different requirements in terms of material, workmanship, design and features. Each one of our backpacks is specialized for its own type of activity.

Marked trails, via ferrata or cross-country – what’s your favorite way to travel?

Backpacks differ in many ways. And each feature and function is geared to a specific type of activity. Before buying a pack, you should spend some time thinking about where you’ll be using it the most often. If you’ll be traveling in (high) alpine terrain, you’ll need a particularly robust model. For longer trips you’ll need adequate storage space, while for short trips a lighter version is a good choice.

Of course, you can always use your pack for other activities. But its optimal functionality is designed for its specific use.

Mountain enthusiasts who prioritize physical challenges and who already have the necessary skills and experience, will really appreciate our highly functional mountain and climbing backpacks. These are great for a range of activities, including short hikes in the mountains with some off-trail sections, high alpine expeditions with long approaches where you have to carry all of your food and gear, via ferrata tours or even multi-pitch climbing routes.

Are you looking for genuine adventure? The journey is the reward and the experience is what counts. If you’re also physically fit, have some organizational skills and a good sense of direction, then you’ve got what it takes to master a long, challenging route. A VAUDE trekking backpack will help you meet your goals. It can easily transport all your gear while you explore new worlds.

Head out your door and start enjoying what nature has to offer. Hikers can choose their own level of difficulty. In general, you should stick to marked paths and only head cross-country as an exception. Hiking covers a range of terrain that’s incredibly diverse – from 0 elevation gain to soft hills to high elevation Alpine peaks.

Your backpack is along for the ride, wherever you go. Whether it’s your off-time or the daily commute, an urban jungle or a mountain summit, the 9-5 or an exotic vacation. Your backpack is an expression of your attitude toward life.

Backpack hangtags

Every VAUDE backpack has a hangtag that helps you recognize what activity the pack was designed for.

Women have their own specific needs when it comes to backpack design. Our women’s backpacks are specifically engineered to meet these needs.

Torso length

Women are an average of 10 cm shorter than men – they have a shorter torso and their shoulders are narrower. VAUDE women’s backpacks are designed to have a shorter back and are also smaller and narrower than the equivalent versions for men. This guarantees an optimal fit.

Shoulder straps

In general, women’s backs are narrower than men’s in the shoulder area. To make sure that the shoulder straps don’t chafe uncomfortably or pinch at the front, we’ve designed our women’s backpacks with s-shaped shoulder straps. This design makes the pack especially stable and keeps it from sliding around on your back. In addition, the height of the sternum strap can be adjusted to allow for the best fit possible.

The volume of a pack in liters doesn’t translate to the load that it carries – for example, a 25 liter pack doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good for a 25 kg load. The number of liters tells you the volume that it can hold – the size of the pack. Note that these are maximum measurements – a pack isn’t square and you can’t determine the volume based on its specific dimensions. The pack’s suspension system and design determines how many kilos it can comfortably carry.

Calculating the volume

The volume of a backpack is determined using the criteria of the ASTM F2153-01 standard test method. This standard test method specifies that all of the pack’s closeable compartments are filled with small plastic balls. All of these balls are then emptied into a container with a scale on the side. This standard test method is used by all well-known backpack manufacturers.
