The right Biking Backpack

When choosing a backpack, you’ve got to consider what it will be used for.
Depending on the terrain and what kind of an adventure you’ve got planned, there will be different requirements in terms of material, workmanship, design and features. Each one of our backpacks is specialized for its own type of activity.

Also very important for the right decision is the heart of the backpack: the back system – all information about it in this chapter.

There are a lot of different types of bike backpacks out there. Before buying a pack, you should spend some time thinking about where you’ll be using it the most often. If you like to mountain bike on single tracks, you’ll need more protection. For longer journeys, you’ll need plenty of storage space and a pack that weighs less. The designs of the models vary depending on the demands.

Each pack is designed with different features and functionality for a specific activity. Of course, you can always use your pack for other activities. But its optimal functionality is designed for its specific use.

If you love to mountain bike, if it’s the challenge and the adrenaline rush you need, then we’ve got the high performance bike packs you’ll want. Our All Mountain gear will let you take on the challenge of both uphill and downhill biking, on dirt roads and single tracks. Enduro is focused more on the downhill ride.

Women have their own specific needs when it comes to backpack design. Our women’s backpacks are specifically engineered to meet these needs.

Shoulder straps

In general, women’s backs are narrower than men’s in the shoulder area. To make sure that the shoulder straps don’t chafe uncomfortably or pinch at the front, we’ve designed our women’s backpacks with s-shaped shoulder straps. This design makes the pack especially stable and keeps it from sliding around on your back. In addition, the height of the sternum strap can be adjusted to allow for the best fit possible.

Torso length

Women are an average of 10 cm shorter than men – they have a shorter torso and their shoulders are usually narrower. VAUDE women’s backpacks are designed to have a shorter back and are also smaller and narrower than the equivalent versions for men. This guarantees an optimal fit.

The female pelvis is wider and shallower than that of men. The waist straps of our women’s backpacks are therefore specially shaped and slightly wider in order to provide optimal comfort.

The volume of a pack in liters doesn’t translate to the load that it carries – for example, a 25 liter pack doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good for a 25 kg load. The number of liters tells you the volume that it can hold – the size of the pack. Note that these are maximum measurements – a pack isn’t square and you can’t determine the volume based on its specific dimensions. The pack’s suspension system and design determines how many kilos it can comfortably carry.

Calculating the volume

The volume of a backpack is determined using the criteria of the ASTM F2153-01 standard test method. This standard test method specifies that all of the pack’s compartments are filled with small plastic balls. All of these balls are then emptied into a container with a scale on the side. This standard test method is used by all well-known backpack manufacturers.
